Mount Ozren is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located between the river Bosna in the west and the river Spreča in the north. Mount Ozren is divided between two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina). The people of this area believe that the most famous building on the mountain, the Ozren monastery, was built in 1284. It is considered that the monastery is the endowment of the famous lineage of Nemanjić. Older historians claim that the monastery is the endowment of King Stefan Dragutin. This claim is supported by the fact that King Stefan ruled from 1284 to 1316 the territory on which the monastery was built. In 2003, the monastery was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Eagle Lake is located not far from the monastery. The lake is in the so-called living rock. Today it is a favorite gathering place for hikers and mountain lovers. It is located in a coniferous forest. The lake was created by damming the course of Studeni potok. It is filled with ordinary mineral water from a nearby spring. River flows and thermo-mineral springs are a special treasure of the Ozren mountains. The most important rivers on Mount Ozren are: Rakovac, southern and northern rivers Bukovica, Turija and Jadrina. Below Ostravica (the highest peak on the mountain) springs the river Prenja. Important tributaries of the river Prenja are the streams: Velika Prenja, Mala Prenja, and the stream Vukovac. The water of the fountain “Vukeljina voda” and “Krnjin Točak” is refreshed by the coldness and sharpness of the mountain water. The source of alkaline water (pH12) is the prevention against skin diseases and kidney diseases. The most important mountain springs are located on the highest and central part of the mountain. Many springs have healing properties. Acidic thermo-mineral waters exist in the Sprječan fault zone at the Boljanić, Sočkovac, and Kakmuž sites. They exist in the part of western Ozren in the area of the settlement Rječica.
The highest peak of the mountain is called Velika Ostravica. It is 918 meters above sea level. The smaller peaks of the mountain are Mala Ostravica, and the mountain peak Kraljica. The name of the mountain is associated with the Bosnian queen Katarina Kosača. Legend has it that the Bosnian queen Katarina climbed to the top of the mountain and was delighted by the beauty of the mountain. Then Queen Catherine declared: “Dear God, beautiful horizons.” Thus, the word “Obzor” or ozaren gave rise to the name of the mountain Ozren. Mount Ozren is a gentle mountain. There are many pastures, water sources and especially thermal water sources. This mountain is adorned with forest wealth. In the seventies of the 20th century, this area of mixed deciduous and coniferous forests developed gradually. It was temporarily built to become an excursion and recreation center in this part of Bosnia. The mountain offers a range of facilities including clean air, untouched nature and the opportunity for adrenaline sports. In the nearby municipality of Petrovo, they intend to import religious, spa and mountain tourism. On Ozren, there is the Izren Monastery, the spa-tourist complex “Terme Ozren” and the Tourist Zone called Kaludjerica. The tourist zone includes two hotels, sports fields, markets and shops and a promenade. The plan is to expand the zone to 16,000 square meters and partially open it to guests and visitors. Mount Ozren offers hospitality, friendly hosts and a great gastronomic offer (homemade brandy, donuts, cheeses, homemade cheese and more). Mount Ozren is known for 3 events (Ozren mountaineering marathon on the first weekend in June, Wolf Days for all lovers of hunting, and Ozrenaline XC for all people who love adrenaline sports and Days of grass and plants). In addition to these events, numerous other events are organized that bring together people from all over the world for the warmth of the heart of the host and the well-known hospitality. A characteristic musical and percussion instrument of this region is the popular “shargija”.
