The essential oil or unique combination of oils is found in the root, stem, leaves and flowers of each plant. Essential oils of selected plants are used in aromatherapy (to strengthen physical, mental, spiritual balance and harmony). The therapeutic effect of the oil comes from the effect of the oil on hormones and other carriers of chemical messages in the body and brain.
4,500 BC encourages the use of essential oils. Back then, the Egyptians made scents and medicines from essential oils. The Egyptians associated the production of fragrances with religion. To each of the mighty Egyptian gods the Egyptians associated one fragrance. In the process of mummification, the priests used essential oils. That is why traces of these substances are found on mummies up to 3000 years old.
This ancient knowledge was maintained among Greek, Arab, and Roman physicians whose work had been significant for centuries. As early as the 18th century, essential oils were widely used in medicine. At the end of the 19th century, many extracts could be produced artificially. Such a procedure was easier and cheaper than obtaining the same substances from plants. This is why natural remedies have been used less frequently.
Modern aromatherapy begins with the work of the French chemist René Maurice Gattefossé . In 1920, chemist René Maurice Gattefossé discovered the healing properties of lavender oil. Large quantities of lavender are grown right in the south of France.
In Gattefossé’s book we also find the first written record in modern times to the skin as a route of administration for essential oils. He talks about oral, rectal, inhalational and injection (they had all been used by then) and continues: “Why not add cutaneous absorption to this list?” This hint was later taken up by Marguerite Maury, but that’s another story.
This encourages him to research on the antiseptic effects of essential oils. In 1937, the first book on aromatherapy was published.
