The coffee plant thrives naturally and bears fruit only in the tropics. Many growers, plantation workers and traders have jobs thanks to coffee. Today, it is over 20 million people employed in various jobs related to coffee. Still, the history of coffee and the journey of coffee around the world has been winding and time-consuming over time. Therefore, the history of coffee is always interesting and exciting from the homeland in Africa to the triumphant march across Arabia to Europe and further around the world.
There are no reliable answers to most questions about the origin of coffee. The beginnings are shrouded in a veil of secrecy. There is no data on prehistoric coffee. However, one reliable fact exists that coffee is a wild plant, shrub and tree discovered in Africa. It is also known that coffee on the Arabian continent was grown and used in the form of a beverage. The oldest story about coffee is the story of the Islamic prophet and teacher Muhammad a.s. When Muhammad a.s. once a disease almighty Allah had mercy and sent angels with a potion “black as kabba in Mecca”. After drinking the exciting drink “qahwa” Muhammed a.s. he recovered and threw 40 horsemen out of the saddle – the story goes. There are several other legends about coffee. Nevertheless, the first reliable data date back to the 15th century. It was then that drinking coffee became fashionable in Arabia. Coffee from its Ethiopian homeland is thought to have arrived in Yemen via the Bab el Mandeb strait that separates Africa from Asia. There is no true historical truth here but all indications are that this plant originated in the present-day southwestern Ethiopian province of Kafa south of Lake Tana on a plateau considered the cradle of mankind. There grew wild coffee that had red fruits. Coffee was brought to Yemen by Islamic pilgrims and perhaps Africans as conquerors and later Arab slaves. The Arabs realized that this plant is miraculous because it gives a powerful fragrant drink. They kept the secret about coffee for a long time. Coffee exports were also banned. The ban and secrecy lasted until 1600, when coffee was discovered by Portuguese and Dutch sailors. They probably took the plant without permission and took it to the island of Ceylon in the Indian Ocean. There they began to cultivate this plant. At the same time, the Indian pilgrim Baba Budan smuggled hidden coffee seeds and brought the seeds to his home in India. He began to be fascinated by the properties of the drink because of the plant’s nurseries. 1699 The Dutch bring coffee to the island of Java. Van Horn, the then governor of Indonesia, brought coffee to Amsterdam in 1706. There they grew coffee in artificial conditions. The plant was then grown in nurseries across Europe. A bush of coffee arrived in Paris as a gift to King Louis XIV of France. The king ordered that a special nursery be made for this plant in the botanical garden because he considered the plant a rarity. Coffee spread from that nursery to the whole world.
France owned many overseas states even though it was not a major colonial superpower. The French still managed to establish a strong position in the Caribbean, especially on the island of Martinique in the Lesser Antilles, when a fierce imperial battle for colonies was fought at that time and century (between the world powers of Great Britain, Spain and France). The island of Martinique has just played a role in spreading coffee around the world. According to historical data, French captain Gabriel de Qluie manages to get one ornamental coffee bush from a strictly guarded greenhouse in Paris. Crops this shrub undamaged transfer by boat to Martinique. The bush was watered every day. When the ship ran out of water for almost a month, the captain shared his own following of the water with the plant.
In 1723 the captain planted a bush in his own garden on Martinique and sheltered the bush with other resilient plants which protected the bush from wind, sun and prying eyes. The captain watched, watered and controlled the bush every day. The effort paid off. The Parisian ornamental shrub bore fruit, ie ripe red cherry coffee. The captain did a bush transplant knowing the preciousness of the plant. He managed to grow a multitude of coffee bushes. The Captain’s Garden is becoming a nursery for all French estates, especially in the countries of South and Central America. This is how coffee plantations were created in Jamaica, Mexico, the Philippines and Venezuela. By the middle of the 20th century, about 18 million coffee trees had grown from one plant.
The most famous ingredient in coffee is caffeine
Caffeine is absorbed or passes directly into the blood where it stays for about 4 hours. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system or eliminates fatigue. While tea is a refreshing beverage along with rituals and tradition, coffee is a stimulating beverage. The effect of caffeine from coffee reaches its peak after 5 to 10 minutes (suddenly increases the energy level) and disappears after about 30 minutes. Caffeine from tea reaches its maximum effect more slowly, i.e. after 40 to 45 minutes and disappears after about 70 minutes. However, coffee with the scent awakens all the senses and instantly improves the mood. The average cup of coffee contains 100 to 150 mg of caffeine. People believe that coffee causes a jump in blood pressure, which is partly true because that effect is short-lived. After that, the value of the pressure decreases more than it was originally grew. That’s why we can say that coffee lowers blood pressure. Coffee also contains other substances (itrigonelin – which is converted into niacin from group B complex under the influence of heat) and has about 600 scents.
For centuries, coffee has provoked conflicting opinions about its healing properties. In the 1920s, people believed that coffee had more negative effects on health. Since then, nearly 20,000 studies on coffee have been published worldwide. Some results have shown that coffee still has more positive effects on human health. Coffee stimulates concentration, cognitive processes, speeds up brain processes, relieves headaches, maintains alertness, strengthens good mood and the like. It has such a positive effect on the whole organism. It has been determined that roasting coffee creates 4 times more antioxidants than tea. Caffeine is often the basic ingredient in various cosmetic products, creams and oils. Scientists say that coffee reduces the risk of heart disease and liver damage, helps control asthma and alleviates or even dilutes attacks in which medications are not effective. Moderate coffee consumption means about 3 cups a day. It has not been determined that more coffee harms the body or that it depends on the health condition of the consumer. However, coffee is not for all people because in some people it can cause nervousness, rapid heartbeat, elevated cholesterol and thus cause atherosclerosis, or in larger quantities in patients with gastroenterological problems it causes increased obesity and increased risk of osteoporosis. Some research says that 2 to 4 cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of colon cancer by 24%. Numerous studies look for a link between caffeine and the impact on women’s health. Caffeine consumption has been found to be safe for women. Today, most doctors agree that it is safe to consume moderate doses of caffeine during pregnancy. It has been proven that a daily dose of 300 to 400 mg or 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day has no harmful effects for either mother or child. Half of the caffeine from an adult’s cup of coffee is eliminated after 2.5 to 4.5 hours, while the fetus or newborn needs significantly more time.
People with severe heart disorders are advised to give up coffee or decaffeinated coffee. Although coffee has no harmful effects on the cardiovascular system. People with a heart attack should watch their daily coffee intake because overdoing it increases the heart rate which can cause arrhythmia.
