Selenium and zinc are important for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland
The thyroid gland controls every human cell. That’s why thyroid disease causes many problems, including autoimmune Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Adequate medical therapy (prescribed by a doctor/medical experts) is key, and there are also selenium and zinc, i.e. minerals without which the thyroid gland cannot function properly.
In ancient times, disease diagnoses were mainly obtained by observing the person/patient. However, observation was key in medicine but also for creating the most beautiful works of art. It is interesting that goiter (that is, an enlarged thyroid gland) was one of the medical problems that was most often depicted in paintings of the ancient period. Even the famous Mona Lisa was speculated to have had goiter. The brilliant Leonardo da Vinci was also the first to paint the thyroid gland in 1511. The function of the thyroid gland was unknown for a long time. Fortunately, everything is much clearer today.
The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland that controls every human cell. The thyroid gland is a human kind of metabolic thermostat. It determines the speed of the brain and heart, regulates body temperature, breathing, monthly cycles and body weight. Increased fatigue, irregular monthly cycles for women, weight gain, swelling, hair loss and frequent mood swings are just some of the signs of reduced thyroid activity.
Reduced function is hypothyroidism, and one of the most common causes is an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto thyroiditis. The endocrinologist prescribes adequate therapy after establishing insufficient thyroid function.
Supplements in addition to medicines can be useful for people with reduced thyroid function. It is important to consult a doctor before using supplements, because improper use of supplements can have an adverse effect on the thyroid gland. Many vitamins and minerals encourage the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Selenium and zinc stand out as very important minerals for better functioning of the thyroid gland.
Selenium – Selenium is a mineral necessary for the production of thyroid hormones. It protects thyroid tissue from damage caused by oxidative stress, and selenium deficiency causes thyroid disorders and hypothyroidism. Adequate daily intake of selenium is believed to directly affect the health and function of the thyroid gland.
Zinc – zinc is a mineral that is directly related to the proper functioning of the thyroid (thyroid) gland. Optimal levels of zinc are necessary to produce sufficient amounts of thyroid hormones.
Studies show that supplementing with 200 micrograms of selenium per day to people with Hashimoto thyroiditis can cause a significant decrease in antibody levels as well as improve mood.
On the other hand, 30 mg of zinc alone or in combination with selenium in appropriate doses significantly improves thyroid function in people with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. But consultations with doctors and pharmacists are necessary and always desirable.
