Algae spirulina is a natural help against allergies
In the last century, during the 70’s, NASA conducted scientific studies with the alga spirulina (Arthrospira) as a potential food for space travel. Then begins the healthy story of this alga. Algae is a nutritionally rich food. It does not contain cellulose cell walls, so it is easily digested. There are no significant side effects. It is a source of proteins which contain as much as 60 to 70% with all the essential amino acids contained. Algae contain a high proportion of vitamins, especially provitamin A (B carotene) and minerals (mostly calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron).
So far, there is not much published research on the health effects of algae. One of the research areas where algae has benefits is allergic rhinitis. This area is documented. Algae exhibit anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the release of histamine from mast cells. One study from 2008 on patients with allergic rhinitis confirms the benefits of algae on human health. Allergy symptoms (runny nose, sneezing, congestion, itching) are improved.
It is known that immunity is the most important factor for allergies. Algae with nutritional properties can help strengthen the immune system and enable the body to recover quickly.
Algae is a dietary supplement and should be consumed gradually. So it starts with a small dose that increases over time. If any symptoms of intolerance (bloating, diarrhea, etc.) appear, algae should be excluded from consumption. Algae is not the best option for people with an enlarged thyroid gland (and thyroid problems), multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, pregnant women, nursing mothers, people with a metabolic condition “phenylketonuria” (PKU).
Only certified organic algae from a verified supplier should be consumed. A dietary supplement is not a substitute for a balanced diet. The article is not a substitute for medical advice. Algae is available in powder and recommended doses. Doses are between 250 mg and 10 grams per day (in divided doses). You should always read the instructions for use and take advice from your doctor / pharmacist before use.
